Gael Monfils Triumphs On Stockholm

Monfils won Stockholm 2011

Frenchman Gael Monfils won the title at the If Stockholm Open 2011 tournament one of a series of “ATP World Tour 250” after beating Jarkko Nieminem 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 in the final which was held yesterday October 23, 2011. With the win, the World No. 10 claim his first title of the year and captured his fourth title of his career.

Results in Stockholm has not been able to increase its rank to rank better, but he is getting closer to the points achieved by compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (difference 85 points).

“My concentration was the key for me today,” said Monfils. “I just believed I could win this match.

“Jarkko was playing good when he was in front. Some spots in the match were high level tennis and he was moving well. At the end I think he got a bit fatigued. I played him three weeks ago [in Bangkok], but I was more impressed with him today.”

Jarkko Nieminen was denied in the Stockholm Open final for the third time, having also finished runner-up in 2001 and 2006.

“That’s when I play my best and I played a really good second set. I continued that for the beginning of the third set, but unfortunately went down a break and got a bit tired and Monfils stayed strong at the end.”
