David Ferrer Beats Andy Murray in London

Fifth seed Barclay ATP World Tour Finals David Ferrer beat Andy Murray of Britain in the first Group A match 6-4 and 7-5. The Spaniard takes 2 hours to beat the world number three. David Ferrer who also a runner up in 2007, played brilliantly and won 4 times break point during the match.

In the closely fought first set, Murray broke serve first in a lengthy third game but two unforced errors at 2-1 saw the British favourite fall to 0/40. Murray mis-timed a forehand pass to gift Ferrer the game. Neither player appeared to be hitting the ball cleanly and break points came and went. Ferrer kept battling from behind the baseline and clinched the first set after 57 minutes, when Murray hit a backhand long. Ferrer hit six winners and committed 17 unforced errors, while Murray hit 37 per cent of his first serves into court and committed 24 errors.

Concern over Murray’s medical time-out between sets, quickly disappeared when he broke Ferrer’s serve in the opening game. Ferrer hit a short backhand into the net at 30/40, much to his frustration, but the Spaniard was able to regroup and won three of the next four games.

Four poor strokes from Ferrer gifted Murray a 4-3 lead, but he could not extend his advantage. By virtue of serving first in the set, Ferrer kept the pressure on Murray, who committed 44 unforced errors overall – 26 of which came on his backhand. Eventually, on his first match point, Ferrer attacked the net, making Murray lunge to for two deep groundstrokes. Ferrer completed the match with a crosscourt backhand into space.

The 29-year-old Ferrer, who qualified for the year-end championship in 2007 and 2010, is now 6-8 this season against Top 10 opponents. He has a 2-4 record in ATP World Tour finals.

Murray drops to a 27-3 record since mid-August and 17-2 since reaching the US Open semi-finals.
